In the Steps of Alexander the Great
Five Days / Four Nights

Alexander the Great conquered the known world of his day. And he spent a considerable portion of his days conquering Egypt. There is even ample evidence that his final resting place is in or near a northern oasis. Over five days and four nights, we’ll retrace the fabulous episodes of Alexander. He didn’t just lend his name to Alexandria. He left a lasting legacy that you can experience, along with a memorable taste of desert life.

Day 1 – Cairo, El Baharya (Lunch. Dinner )
We’ll set out from Cairo after breakfast in an air-conditioned four-by-four Toyota Land Cruiser, the perfect vehicle, combining ruggedness and comfort for our desert excursion. In short order, the throbbing capital gives way to a landscape of sand and rock. Throughout the 320-kilometer drive to the oasis of El Baharya, we’ll twist and turn up and over escarpments, then proceed over razor-straight asphalt laid through sand dunes. We’ll stop along the way for a picnic, and a chance to appreciate the surprising array of wildlife that survives in the parched region. Our destination for the day is El Bechmou, where we’ll bathe in hot sulphureous waters under a nightly performance of shooting stars.

Day 2 –Mahmoud Eid, Black Desert, White Desert, Encampment (Breakfast. Lunch. Dinner )
Hot tea or coffee will be most welcome in the morning while the desert is still cool. Then it’s off to the Golden Mummies: the fabulous desert tombs of Benentuie and Zed Amun. Zed Amun’s tomb is unique in all of ancient Egypt, a majestic columned space in place of the usual claustophobic chambers. We’ll view the Temple of Bess and Isis as well, and explore the village of Alexander built of mud bricks. A collection of pottery from the area is on display in the local museum of Mahmoud Eid oasis, where we’ll take a break for lunch. Afterward, we’ll board our vehicle to ascend through the Black Desert to view an extraordinary vista of subtle landscapes, and cross to Crystal Mountain, named for minerals reflecting in the sun, an unforgettable sight, and a challenge to capture by camera. Our motor safari continues for 160 kilometers across the White Desert, bedecked with limestone columns in the shapes of mushrooms and imaginary beasts. Our goal tonight is the desert itself. We’ll rest in a traditional Bedouin encampment, and enjoy a dinner cooked over hot coals.

Day 3 - Farafra, Dakla, El Kasr (Breakfast. Lunch. Dinner )
Our desert journey continues after a welcome wake-up of hot tea or coffee, breads, and fruits. After our camp is packed up, we’ll pass the small, modern oasis town of Farafra and continue toward Dakhla. Along the way we’ll enjoy a picnic lunch, and visit the Temple of the Rook, the multi-colored Mountain of El Mezayeka, and the ancient desert fortress village of El Kasr, built of mud bricks, where we’ll spend the night in the Hotel El Negoum.

Day 4 – El Kasr, Kharga (Breakfast. Lunch. Dinner )
Our goal today is the oasis of Kharga, 200 kilometers across the desert. Upon arrival, we’ll lunch in a local establishment, and check into the Pioneer Hotel. Our visit starts with El Bagawat, an ancient site once inhabited by Christians. We’ll also view the Temple of Hibis, one of the finest and best-preserved in Egypt, and only re-discovered in the last century. We’ll see how pottery and tapestries are made in the local manner, then return to our hotel for dinner. Afterwards, we’ll join the locals for a sample of nighttime entertainment in the coffee house of Um Kalsoum.

Day 5 – Luxor (B)
We start out after breakfast for the 320-kilometer drive through yet another sector of the Western Desert, headed for the Nile Valley. Our safari ends in Luxor, the fabled capital of Upper Egypt. We 'll be glad to help with your air fare and transfer back to Cairo or Sharm el Sheikh

CRUISE THE NILE IN LUXURY...

Mark Twain did it. Rockefeller did it. More recently, First Ladies Barbara Bush and Laura Bush, and pop music legend Lionel Richie did it:

cruise Egypt's timeless Nile in luxury.
Only a few Nile cruisers qualify as the most luxurious vessels on the Nile. In order to meet the requirements of Nubian Nile Cruises, they must be the newest and best, with up-to-the-minute facilities and all possible luxury services such as deluxe staterooms with private bath
(shower and/or bathtub), 20-inch satellite TV,  large picture window, mini bar, individual climate control, electronic entry system and security deposit boxes, hair dryer and direct-dial telephone.
The service onboard, under the watchful control of companies renowned worldwide for excellence, must be flawless and exceed guests’ expectations, and also reflect the warm traditional hospitality of the Egyptian people.

Few vessels qualify. Here they are:

Radamis I
The four-deck, 72-meter (236-foot)-long Radamis I operated by the Swiss Mövenpick hospitality experts has 71 deluxe staterooms, four deluxe suites, a gourmet restaurant, swimming pool, bar and boutique.

Honeymoon on the Radamis Nile Cruise

Radamis II

Amarco
The brand-new, ultra-luxurious Amarco, launched in late 2003, has 51 staterooms, all with large picture windows and Internet access. Four junior suites (well equipped for handicapped passengers), two Presidential suites and two Royal suites accommodate special guests.
The Amarco is the only vessel on the Nile with a true mini-gym (not just an exercise room), and a mini-spa with two saunas, two massage rooms and steam rooms. Two elevators take guests (especially those who find stairs difficult) between decks.
Clients of Travel In Style.com receive special consideration on these luxury cruises. If you reserve your Presidential or Royal Suite through Travel In Style.com , we will provide you with a private valet to take care of your personal and touring needs, and a private guide and Egyptologist to answer any questions you may have about the wonders around you. Two
guests in each suite will be entitled to a 30-minute massage. Just for fun, we'll even engage a local fortune-teller, knowledgeable in the mystic secrets of ancient Egypt, to read the future in your palm or your coffee grounds! These special services are not available to other
passengers, even those who reserve Presidential Suites by other means.
You must reserve through Travel In Style.com to enjoy them.

MS Nile Dream . MS Queen of Hansa

The Great Pyramid of Cheops . . . Are You Up to the Adventure?

A journey into the heart of the Great Pyramid is a real-life Indiana Jones adventure. But it can also be a taxing and frightening one.

You'll follow claustrophobic passages cut into the heart of the pyramid, feel the pull of the mass of stone directly above. For better or worse, you have placed yourself in the hands of the engineering expertise of the ancients.

As you continue along the unventilated passages, the oxygen becomes depleted, the air becomes noticeably warmer and more pungent. The ascent of steep stairways consumes more energy than you imagined, and you find yourself short of breath. Lighting is dim, every footstep must be carefully calculated. Low passageways repeatedly oblige you to advance while bent down, and your muscles protest. Where walls disappear into the dark above, you feel wedged into a shaft. Despite warnings, and your own resolve, claustrophobic feelings are hard to suppress.

Finally, you behold the King's Chamber at the heart of the Great Pyramid. The effort to reach it has made the reward more exhilarating than you imagined. If only you can face the return.

Is the King's Chamber for you? If you're not used to bending and regular exercise, you might find the challenge beyond your capabilities. Turning back is more difficult the farther you go, and the experience could leave you aching for days afterwards.

Be realistic about yourself, your abilities, and your disposition. And remember that there are many other rewarding sights and adventures at Giza, without the physical challenge and risks of the King's Chamber.

The decision is up to you
